On the 11th of June international denim pioneer G-Star RAW and industrial designer Marc Newson celebrated a decade of working together with an event at Design Museum London. Since 2004, the pair have collaborated on seasonal collections, garnering an eager global following.
The collection was commemorated from numerous perspectives, combining artwork from their ten years of collaboration with custom flight-cases and glass-compressed garments. The multi-faceted approach gave guests an experience of the innovative dynamism of G-Star, and its harmony with Newson’s work.
“I think it is admirable that G-Star has the vision to embrace one industry’s ability to learn from another. They understand that design is a way of a company differentiating itself.” Marc Newson
The collections – renowned for their architectural constructions, streetwear references, and premium fabrications – always include graphics that remain distinctively “Newson” while regenerating seasonally. These iconic artworks are united in the collection’s highlight piece, the Reversible Tour Jacket. The changeable bomber jacket features a compilation of graphic patches on grey silk sateen. When turned, a black quilted side is revealed, offering a minimalist alternative. Typically G-Star, the boundaries of art and fashion were blurred as blown-up versions of these artworks were exhibited at the event, with Australian DJ Oscar Key Sung filling the space with an ambient soundtrack.
The G-Star RAW by Marc Newson Anniversary Collection for Autumn/Winter 2014 is available from 1st October 2014 online from g-star.com. Devotees will be able to get a head start on the collection at oki-ni.com, where it will be exclusively available from 1st September.
